Joel Anderson and Yasin Koc first met in the cold accommodation of the IACCP Conference in Stellenbosch, South Africa, in 2012 when Joel was an early PhD student and Yasin had just finished his bachelor and looking for PhDs. They designed their first study in a Kurdish restaurant in Cape Town on the effect of language on cognition, coded their first experiment while waiting at the airport (which pretty much defines their old "messy" way of working), and they went to several conferences across the world just for science, not for fun at all. Since then, despite the time difference between Europe and Melbourne, they worked together seamlessly, published several papers, received grants, and continue to jointly supervise students. Somehow, their mind works very similarly. A few times, when one of them told the other a cool research idea and the design, the other one replied "I have run that study already!" This has made things easier to progress. And finally, they have met a number of brilliant students on the way - which helped them achieve great things. In other words, Joel Anderson is at the core of Koc Lab and is the driving force behind this collaborative effort.
